Guwahati, Jan 5 (PTI) Rajat Kamal awardee Assamese film director Siba Prasad Thakur died today in a hospital here following protracted illness. He was 72.

Thakur had directed popular films such as Mamata, Faguni, Buari, Ghar Sangsar, Sunmoina, Monmondir, Aai Desh Mur, Astarag, among others, family sources said.

The director who had 14 films, over 170 documentaries and three telefilms to his credit was considered to have introduced commercial modern cinema in the state.

Born at Nazira in upper Assam's Sibsagar district, the sources said, Thakur is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.

His eldest daughter is the daughter-in-law of noted Assamese film actress Bidya Rao and the other daughter is the wife of award winning film director Bidyut Chakravorty, the sources added.
