Atwal: second sikh to hold Deputy Speaker's post
New Delhi, Jun 8 (PTI) Akali Dal member Charanjit Singh Atwal would be the second Sikh to hold the post of deputy speaker in the history of the country, the first being Hukum Singh, who was elected to the post in March 1956.

Hukum Singh, a jurist, was member of the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms since 1952. He was elected Speaker of the house in 1962.

Singh, a judge of the Kapurthala High Court, was elected to the Constituent Assembly in April 1948 as a member of the Akali Dal. He was also member of the Provisional Parliament (1950-52) and was later elected to the first Lok Sabha in 1952 from PEPSU constituency.

On March 20, 1956, he was unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha even when he was member of the opposition. He was re-elected Deputy Speaker on May 17, 1957.

In 1962, Hukum Singh returned for the third time to the Lok Sabha this time on a Congress ticket from Patiala. He was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the third Lok Sabha.
