Army Major Among Five Soldiers Killed in Gunbattle
Five army personnel, including a major, were killed in a fierce gunbattle with militants, two of whom were gunned down by security forces in Kupwara district, defence sources said today.

The toll among the injured soldiers may go up as some of them were in a critical condition, they said.

Acting on specific information about presence of militants in Hafrada forests in the district, troops launched an operation two days back. A para unit, whose men took the casualties, had joined the encounter yesterday.

The heavily-armed militants hiding in the forest opened fire on the joint search party of army and police and in the ensuing gunbattle, a major was killed and several jawans were injured, a defence spokesmsan said.

Four of the wounded jawans later succumbed to injuries.

In the return fire, two militants were killed this morning, the spokesman said.

Defence sources said that the encounter took place after the security forces were informed that a group of militants had gone to the forest area to receive a bunch of terrorists infiltrating from across the border.

In separate encounter, a militant was killed in Tangdhar area of the district yesterday while three ultras were gunned down at Drangyari near Chowkibal area of the district on Friday.
