Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's hasty disqualification from the Lok Sabha is a conspiracy by the Centre, senior party leader Anand Sharma said on Monday.

The former Union minister also said Gandhi has every right to speak in Parliament.

Gandhi was on March 23 sentenced to two years in jail by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case over his "why all thieves have Modi surname" remark. A day later, he was disqualified from the Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction in the case.

Sharma, who was here to meet Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, expressed faith in judiciary and said that the lower court's decision would not last in a higher court and the Congress party would fight a political and legal battle against it, according to an official release.

Later, interacting with media, Chief Minister Sukhu said that Gandhi's fearless campaigning to save democracy was a hitch to the Union government and the decision of his disqualification from Lok Sabha has been attempted to suppress his voice.

The former Congress chief started 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' to raise awareness of the misdeeds of the Centre, the CM said, adding that people would give a befitting reply to BJP in the coming elections in the country.

He also urged all opposition parties to unite to save democracy.
