After being disqualified as a member of the parliament, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been asked to vacate his government bungalow within a month.

Gandhi was allotted the 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow after his election as a Lok Sabha MP in 2004. The notice to Gandhi was served by the Housing Committee of the Lok Sabha.

Following his conviction and sentencing in a 2019 defamation case, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a Member of Parliament on Friday. The Lok Sabha Secretariat in its notification said that Rahul stands disqualified from March 23, the date he was convicted and sentenced.

Giving immediate bail, the court allowed the former Congress president 30 days to appeal in a higher court.

"As he has been disqualified from Lok Sabha, he is not entitled to a government accommodation. According to rules, he will have to vacate his official bungalow within a month since the date of disqualification order," an official of the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry said.

An official said that Gandhi can write to the Housing Committee seeking an extended stay, a request that can be considered by the panel. The notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat was marked to various departments, including the Directorate of Estates, New Delhi Municipal Council, and all the benefits available to Gandhi as a member of Parliament too are under review.
