Maha Records 10 New Coronavirus Cases, 1 Death; Active Tally At 134

Maharashtra on Monday recorded 10 fresh coronavirus cases, while one more  patient succumbed to the infection in the state, said the  health department.

With these additions, the state's overall COVID-19 tally rose to 81,36,945, while the toll increased to 1,48,419, said a health department bulletin. It said since December 24, when the health department started screening travellers coming from overseas, 4,12,040 international passengers have arrived at Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur airports.

Of these, RT-PCR test was done on 9,415 and 23 positive swab samples were sent for genome sequencing, said the bulletin.“All positive samples are referred for WGS (Whole Genome Sequencing),” it said. Genome sequencing is a sophisticated laboratory test that can map out the whole genetic makeup of a virus from a patient’s swab sample and help in detection of a new variant.

Out of these 23 RT-PCR positive patients identified till date, Maharashtra accounted for 11 and among them five were from Mumbai, three from Pune, one each from Navi Mumbai, Amravati and Sangli. Also, four patients were from Gujarat, two from Kerala and one from Goa, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Odisha and Telangana.

The bulletin said 15 patients recovered from the coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, taking their overall count to 79,88,392 and leaving the state with 134  active cases. The state's coronavirus recovery rate stood at 98.17 per cent.
It said 6,694 coronavirus tests were conducted in the state in the last 24 hours, taking their cumulative tally to 8,61,09,531.
