Cyclone Mandous Aftermath: IMD Predicts Heavy Showers In TN, Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala Until Tuesday

Heavy rains to continue in coastal states this week

The Indian Meteorological Department on Sunday predicted heavy showers in southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh until Tuesday in the aftermath of cyclone Mandous, that made landfall in Mahabalipuram, Chennai on Friday night.

Heavy showers lashed parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry all through the weekend. 

A yellow alert was issued for Sunday in Bangalore by the IMD as rainfall continued throughout the day. A rain holiday was also declared in Kancheepuram Taluk of Kancheepuram district and Uthukottai Taluq of Tiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu due to the expected rainfall.

Meanwhile, Coimbatore citizens woke up to dense blanket of fog on Monday morning as heavy showers lashed the city on Sunday night.

The IMD's statement on Sunday read, “Rainfall warning: Heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely over Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka & south Coastal Andhra Pradesh today and over Kerala & Mahe during 11th-13th December 2022 and decrease in rainfall activity over the region thereafter.”

It further said, “Squally weather (wind speed reaching 35-45 kmph ) very likely over southeast & adjoining eastcentral Arabian Sea and along & off Kerala-Karnataka coast during 11th-13th and over eastcentral & adjoining southeast Arabian Sea during 14th -15th Dec. 2022.”

The IMD further said, “A cyclonic circulation likely to emerge into south Andaman Sea around 13 December, 2022. Under its influence, fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls likely over Andaman & Nicobar on 14 & 15 December.”

Against this backdrop, localised rain alerts have been issued in the vulnerable states and fishermen have been advised not to venture out near the coasts on the said dates.
