Then, she felt she could make it big in the garment exports business. She participated in Delhi’s international garment trade fair, but did not get noticed by big buyers as she did not have the scalability or the range. But some of her unique concepts got the attention of a few European buyers. She started with five machines and, in 2006, went back to the same garment fair with a larger spectrum of products. In business, "one needs to create a perception of being big even if one isn’t", she feels. Orders started flowing in and, today, she has 25 machines and subcontracts work to factories in Tiruppur and Delhi. With exports touching 50,000 pieces a month, she even supplies to renowned retail houses like Macy’s through their vendors. Logically, her next stop was retail; she started an exclusive shop in Bangalore and plans her own label soon. Once the garments business is established, she hopes to move on—maybe set up that dream restaurant, or even pursue her new-born passion to make films.
