AFTER three dismal World Cups Gavaskar finally had a good outing in '87. He even scored the only century of his one-day career—against New Zealand on October 31. The maestro was in a murderous mood as he hit 103 not out, which enabled India to enter the semi-finals.

New Zealand had scored 221 runs in 50 overs. While going out to open the innings, he told his partner K. Srikkanth: "Let's finish it off in 30 overs." Srikkanth had to play second fiddle as Gavaskar began smashing the bowlers all round. In one Ewan Chatfield over he scored 21 runs—066441. Gavaskar's 100 came off 85 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes. All this while reportedly suffering from a fever of 103 degrees. Till '92, it was one of the three fastest centuries in the annals of the World Cup. It was a great day for India as in the morning Chetan Sharma had performed a hat-trick.
