All right, Vikram Bhatt wanted to do his take on What Lies Beneath; he should have simply emulated a western plot without attempting an update of Ramsay Brothers. That would have spared us two hours plus of perplexing torture. Unlike other cinematic anguish, this one deludes with ‘mood lighting’ and fancy camera work.

Bipasha Basu plays the wife tormented by a now dead, ‘half-crazy’ woman, used and dumped by Dino Morea, her husband. When shown, she appears in blue and gold, reciting poetry, playing a piano or violin, with pulp mystique that drains all terror and suspense.

Why can’t Indian directors create a genuinely horrifying story? Can’t there be a husband who is all bad (not a creature who repents perennially)?

The final resolution of Raaz is laughably timid. The old suspense films at least knew how to entertain and sustain tempo. Here characters fake dread and sing inanely: Kuch Hai? Kuch Bhi Nahin.
