My husband is a bread-fiend. So we landed up at the Boston-origin chain Au Bon Pain the day it opened. We’ve been back almost every weekend. And made post-work evening stops to pick up plain bagels (Rs 15), slightly sourdough-ish, which we split in half, toast lightly and dab with butter to keep us going till dinner. Au Bon Pain is that kind of place: it’s got something for those in-between times.
For lunch, we like the Tuscan chicken soup (Rs 70)—we suspect a powder base, but the soup is always hearty, with one of the 11 kinds of bread (Rs 10-30) and a glass of the freshest orange juice in town (Rs 40). Larger appetites can sink their teeth into signature sandwiches (recommended: hummus and olive on toasted jalapeno-cheddar bagel, Rs 59, for vegetarians, and chicken pesto panini, Rs 109) or get their fill of the harvest rice bowls with chhole or paneer or chicken (with a choice of sauces: teriyaki, citrus chilli and the intriguing tollygunge), Rs 75-145. Decent food, not superlative, and not inexpensive. And their coffee (Rs 25) is cheaper (and possibly better) than the other chains’. Reason enough to drop by, since it’s going to be all over India soon.
