Is Coca-Cola shutting its controversial bottling plant in Plachimada? According to sources in the Kerala government, the company has virtually decided to shift its operations to Tamil Nadu. An industries ministry official told Outlook
: "Coke has become a political issue and the government is unlikely to extend its contract when it comes up for renewal in June." The Plachimada plant has been shut down till June under a state government directive since there is severe water shortage in Palakkad district where the plant is. A Coke official told a paper that the state stood to lose more than them. But environment groups, which have been demanding the plant’s closure, are savouring the fizz of impending victory.
