Gentlemen, Decision Is Yours

Theatre aficionados from the city of pearls have three packed days at the Theatre Fest. The God of Carnage, directed by Nadir Khan, starts off on the schoolboy premise of two kids fighting in the park, with one suffering an injury. Their parents hastily intervene—after all, they are just concerned about their wards. Not quite. Another offering, inspired by Hollywood’s 12 Angry Men, is 12 Angry Jurors, also by Khan, which shows an 18-year-old boy on trial for murdering his own father. The evidence is stacked against him, but a lone juror looks at the case in a different light and forces the rest to re-evaluate what they know while introspecting on how their perceptions cloud their judgement. Veritably, all that is needed is a fresh pair of eyes. And finally, there is Satyadeb Dubey’s Dear Liar, which takes a light-hearted look at the correspondence exchanged between George Bernard Shaw and the famous stage actress, Mrs Patrick Campbell, and explores an intriguing relationship. Ravindra Bharathi, Aug 19-21

Mumbai Art
The Dark Silence Drowns Even The Roar

It is a celebration of stillness—a trait seen in the works of artists’ whose work is on display in Mapping Stillness. The show aims at an aesthetic enquiry into the idea of stillness, present in varying degrees in canvases of Sujith S.N., Prathap Modi and Madhu Das. All of them are known for setting their stage in fictitious landscapes, while using mediums as diverse as woodblocks and woodcut prints to watercolours. Famed for his way with watercolours, Sujith is known for breaking away from set patterns of scale and colour in his commentaries on urbanisation and globalisation. The use of woodblocks and woodcut prints by Prathap Modi seeks to bring out a oneness with nature and systems around us, with the artist bringing the theme through the use of self-portraiture. And finally, there is Madhu Das, who uses mixed-media drawings on paper to limn the the human condition in all its tragi-comic paradoxes. Till Aug 31, Nine Fish, The New Great Eastern Mills

Through The Fire

It happened to a five-year-old boy during Partition. Pak, Palli Aur Dilli is about little ‘Palli’, who survived the carnage, found his lost parents, practised different religions and embraced the cultures of two strife-torn countries. This is an endearing story from a tumultuous era. Aug 20, Shri Ram Centre
