Reels In A Giant Movie Box

A film festival with a mission is making its debut—the I View World International festival will start this weekend. Conceived by the transnational art and human rights organisation Engendered, it seeks to present issues related to human rights and gender discrimination. Features of all kinds, ranging from mainstream films and arthouse/indie flicks to documentaries that have slipped under the radar will be on show. Highlights from the line-up include the Indian premiere of Suffragette, a film based on the British women’s movement for equal voting rights, starring Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan. Also on schedule is French director Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan, which tracks the lives of three Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in France. Closer to our shores, multiple films of Mira Nair, including Reluctant Fundamentalist and Monsoon Wedding, will be screened, aside from Haramkhor, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, and Prakash Jha’s Jai Gangaajal. The much-talked-about Aligarh will have a special screening inside the JNU campus. Documentaries like Evaporating Borders, which talks about the racial tensions during the ongoing European refugee crisis, are being featured alongside The Backward Class, a documentary on Dalits. Filmmakers and stars are also expected in equal numbers. Mar 2-8, British Council

In The Zoo There Are Actors

Deccan Herald’s Theatre Festival plans to bring back some classics in a contemporary way as well as showcase some new work along the way. The event will have five groups on show. Opening the festival is Twice Around the Park by Murray Schisgal, a two-act play which does not explore human relationships so much as makes a mockery of them. The happenstance comedy is followed by The Leader/Krapp’s Last Tape, a play written by Samuel Beckett in 1958 about a writer who religiously documents moments of his life on audio and comes back to them to discover himself. Also to be enacted is Gurcharan Das’s 9 Jakhoo Hill, directed by Ashish Sen, which traces the life of a once-prosperous family in Shimla during the ’60s. The CFD group and the Jagriti group will give life to Sriram Iyer’s Investigation SBC and Edward Albee’s At Home at the Zoo. Expect much drama and some riveting performances. Till Mar 12, Multiple Venues
