Chief minister Ashok Gehlot and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi have been charging the Centre with refusing to allocate enough food aid to the drought-hit state. But Union ministry of food and civil supplies figures indicate that Rajasthan has lifted less than half of the foodgrains allocated to it so far.

Not only has Rajasthan failed to lift even half of its annual wheat and rice allocations of 2002, it has lifted only 1.1 lakh tonnes out of 3.2 lakh tonnes of foodgrains given under the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana till September this year.

The poor offtake is perhaps because the state has to pick up the transportation charges which it claims it can’t afford.
