April 9, 1948: 250 killed
Jewish Irgun terrorist group attacks Deir Yassim, Palestine

September 5, 1972 : Munich Olympics
Eight Palestinian Black September terrorists seize eleven Israeli athletes in the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany. Nine of the hostages and five terrorists killed in bungled rescue attempt

December 21, 1975 : The Day of the Jackal
Carlos "The Jackal" and his his Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine hold eleven oil ministers and fifty nine civilians hostage during the OPEC meeting in Vienna, Austria and get several hundred million dollars in ransom money.

November 4, 1979 : US Embassy Iran Hostage Crisis
66 American diplomats held hostage. A US rescue effort fails on 25 April 1980 killing eight Americans and injuring five.The crisis continues until 20 January 1981 when the hostages are released by diplomatic means.

November 20 , 1979 : 250 Killed
Two hundred Islamic terrorists seize Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, taking hundreds of pilgrims hostage. Saudi and French security forces retake the Islamic world's most holy shrine after a intense battle

October 23, 1983:300 Killed
Simultaneous suicide truck bombs on American and French compounds in Beirut, Lebanon. A 12,000 lb bomb destroys a US Marine Corps base killing two hundred and forty one Americans; another fifty eight Frenchmen are killed when a 400 lb device destroys one of their bases. Islamic Jihad claims responsibility. US and French aircraft strike suspected terrorist bases in the Baka'a valley in retaliation.

June 23 , 1985 : 329 killed
Air India Boeing 747 is destroyed by a bomb over the Atlantic. Sikh terrorists, are blamed for the attack. Two cargo handlers killed at Tokyo airport when another Sikh bomb explodes in an Air Canada aircraft en-route to India.

December 21 , 1988 : 259 killed
Pan Am Boeing 747 blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland. Attributed to a number of Middle Eastern terrorist groups. Two Libyan intelligence operatives were tried in connection with this attack. One was convicted in February 2001 in a trial in the Hague, the other set free.

SEPT. 19, 1989:  171 killed
A French U.T.A. DC-10 flying from Brazzaville, the Congo Republic, to Paris exploded over Niger. The Lebanese Islamic Holy War claimed responsibility. France accused Libya.

April 19 , 1995 168 killed
Federal Building in Oklahoma City, United States, totally destroyed by massive truck bomb. Rightwing extremists Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nicholson arrested for the largest terrorist attack in modern American history.

August 7, 1998: 257 killed
US Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar-es-Salem, Tanzania, heavily damaged by massive bomb attacks. In the Nairobi attack 247 people were killed, including 12 Americans, and 4,000 injured. Ten people were killed and 74 injured in Tanzania incident.  Osama bin Laden blamed.

Aug 10, 2001: 152 killed
A passenger train was attacked by UNITA rebels south of Luanda, Angola, one of the bloodiest incidents in Angola's long-running civil war.
