The Debt Jinx
  • Lala Amarnath's century on Test debut set off a jinx. Over the next 30 years, Deepak Shodhan, Kripal Singh, Abbas All Baig and Hanumant Singh all scored hundreds on debut, but then failed to make another one in their career. The jinx was finally broken by Gundappa Viswanath.

  • Lala's eldest son Surinder Amamath fell a victim to the curse too: the 124 he scored against New Zealand at Auckland in 1975-76 remained his only Test hundred. It was also the 100th century in Tests for India.

  • In the course of his 118, Lala Amamath added 186 for the third wicket with CK Nayudu. It remained a record third-wicket partnership for 18 years, till Vijay Merchant and Vijay Hazare added 211 against England at Delhi in 1951-52.

  • Amamath was the first Indian to score a 50 and take a five-for in the same Test. Against England at Lord is in 1946, he took 5 for 118 in the first innings and scored 50 in the second.

  • In all, Amamath made 878 nuns in 24 Tests at an average of 24.38, and took 45 wicket sat 32.91.
