It was an offer Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari couldn't refuse, timidly reiterating the line laid out in Washington. And the American line couldn't have been more dramatic—President Barack Obama openly declaring that it was about time Islamabad realised it wasn't India but the militants who posed an existential challenge to Pakistan. It was a prescription provocative enough to turn Pakistanis apoplectic. But days later, on his trip to Washington, Zardari endorsed the observation of 'the Godfather of the world', saying he had never considered India as an enemy—and projected the Taliban as a menace Pakistan must tackle in its own interest.

The dismay over Zardari's observation was universal, uniting the religious orthodox and the intelligentsia in their condemnation of him.
