The battle is between Kerala CM V.S. Achuthanandan and CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. At the core of it is the controversial deal with Canadian engineering firm SNC Lavalin. In 1998, Vijayan, as power minister, inked the deal for the modernisation of three power plants in the state on the condition that Lavalin would mobilise Rs 98 crore for a cancer centre. There are allegations that the money was siphoned off. The CM wants the deal probed. The CPI(M) doesn’t. Excerpts from an interview with Achuthanandan:
