You are an artist, curator and a prominent gallery owner. Which role do you enjoy most?

Running a gallery is both challenging and exciting, as it has dimensions from mounting an exhibition, documenting and meeting clients.

Your gallery Art Alive introduced an online portal to promote emerging artists in 2011. How successful has the venture been?

Yes, it's growing rapidly. Art is just a click away and the buyer can choose from various genres.

How has the art scene evolved in the past decade?

Our art has also got a foothold internationally and the audience base has broadened.

Recently, your gallery made an effort to 'decommoditise art'. Do you think more focus is on the commercial aspect now?

Art and commerce go hand in hand. It's important to balance the two so that creativity does not suffer.

The phenomenon of fake art has concerned art lovers and buyers. How to check that?

It is important to buy from a good gallery. Also, it is essential to look at the documentation and lineage of the work.

Who are the most difficult people to deal with in the art fraternity?

Wheeler-dealers pretending to be art experts.

Advice for aspiring artists?

They should know art history and develop their own ideas and style.

Status of contemporary Indian art globally?

We have great art but promotions are done by private galleries. With institutional/ gov­ernment support, we can make it global, like China.

Future projects?

The next season opens with artist Nayanaa Kanodia's solo show. Then we have 'St Moritz Art Masters 2014!', focusing on India at St Moritz, Switzerland.
