A Touch Of AV Grace

At a closed-door session of the Rae Bareli special court, which played four video and three audio tapes the CBI has submitted, it said the tapes contained no "provocative" speeches by the accused, except for one by Sadhvi Ritambhara—she was shown inciting the crowd that subsequently demolished the Babri Masjid. Some agency officials, in fact, are beginning to ask: why at all did the CBI go through the motions of pressing charges against party and government bigwigs, especially when the evidence being presented seems to be focused only on one of the eight accused.

The CBI says it has only oral evidence from witnesses against Advani and others. But reportedly there are close to 20 video and audio tapes of December 6, of which only seven have been presented by the investigating agency as evidence. Special judge Vinod Kumar Singh, on his part, will have to decide whether the CBI has made out a prima facie case, and only if he is satisfied will charges be framed against the eight accused. But if the train of events till now is any indication, one can hazard a guess what will finally come out of the case.
