Many women of Indian origin in the UK wear sarees. But when Sharuna Sagar, who works for BBC TV, recently became the first woman to read news wearing the traditional Indian saree, she caused a sensation. Birmingham-based Sharuna works for the BBC news programme Midlands Today. Though the saree is not unfamiliar to the British, there were enough conservative voices against the 29-year-old Sharuna rewriting the BBC dress code. However, there were voices in her support as well, saying it was representative of the multi-ethnic British society. The entire idea, she told the press, came to her when she was attending a wedding reception. And she wanted to wear the saree on TV before someone else beat her to it.
