Every film has its time, place and moment in history. Gadar did as well. But not every film can be timeless and eternal. Gadar certainly is not. Singh Saab The Great proves it. Obviously made with an intent to revive the Deol magic of Gadar, it falls way too short of its aim and shows how the Anil Sharma brand of cinema seems so utterly redundant now. It does try to update and keep pace with the times by having Prakash Raj, the favourite villain of B-grade Bollywood, lock horns with the Deol. But it doesn’t help either. Nor are wrenched-off trees here as effective as the handpump back then. Everything is as predictable. The whole film is focused on the hero-villain rivalry, but the underlying theme is “badla nahin badlaav”. There is drama, dialoguebaazi and dishoom dishoom. Deol shouts, seethes and flares his nostrils. And tries to get things in order with that uber-mythical “dhai kilo ka haath”. The women provide all the “emotional support” and little else. But Singh Saab the Great just refuses to take off. All I did was mourn yet again for an actor as fine as Prakash Raj not getting his due.
