Silence, Total Silence

Why are the MoD and the MEA so stoic about the damning US report on our army?

  • The report is dismissive of the National Security Advisor, Brajesh Mishra. He is described as being lax and lazy at his work. He invited the report's displeasure because he "backed out" of a 7.30 am appointment with a senior Bush administration official while on a US visit.

  • The Directorate General for Military Intelligence (DGMI) is described as an "increasingly problematic chokepoint" which undermines a "broad-based military-to-military relationship."

  • Indian officials are slammed for being "intellectually arrogant" and "protocol-driven"—traits that are "off-putting", "counter-productive". The report praises the Pakistanis as "more accommodating, flexible and easy to work with".

  • It says the poor quality and lack of maintenance of India's weapons system limits its abilities as a capable partner. US policymakers, it says, should not be deceived by the Indian military's size.
