A book on Mata Amritanandamayi, questioning her miracles and "sainthood", is all set to trigger a legal battle. After a year-long police probe, the state government has given the go-ahead for prosecuting author Sreeni Pattathanam, a member of the Indian Rationalists Association. Mata Amritanandamayi: Sacred Stories and Realities is a collection of news clippings, extracts from court records, quotations and allegations dealing with the rise of Saudamini, a poor fishing hamlet girl from Kollam, into an icon of Hindu spiritualism. It also has an interview with the Mata and statements of her close relatives. T.K. Ajan, lawyer and secretary of the Amritapuri Residents Association in Kollam, will file a case against Sreeni. The rationalists and several Left organisations will rally behind him.
