Khan Chacha once had the power to humble all kinds of people. The manicured woman, for instance, would struggle with the onions spilling out of her chicken tikka roll, while the brawny man would be seen clumsily wiping mint chutney off his face while wolfing his seekhs down. What made the Chacha experience even more meaningful was that you ate standing up; and braved the sun, the rain or the cold to savour your mutton tikkas. After the atm, it was vendors like Chacha who made holes-in-the-wall respectable, even desirable.

But that Khan Chacha, the one that inspires irreparable nostalgia, is history. After a public feud with a landlord, Khan Chacha has relocated to the other end of Khan Market’s middle circle, and how! The thumping bass of Punjabi pop meets you on your way in. The interior, with its dangling bulbs and dark wood furniture, resembles a New York loft. There is even a Khan Chacha t-shirt up for sale. The taste and prices are still the same—a friend described it as “Best of the life”. But just looking at the insides of their McDonald’s-like factory kitchen makes you wish that this institution had not been institutionalised.
