Why additional charge of YCEI?

I have great respect for Yale University. It would be a challenge and privilege to organise an institution within it. Also, with the prestige Yale commands we could influence US policies (on climate change and energy).

How will your multiple roles help in the quest for climate change (CC) solutions?

Whatever solutions we come up with, we will need linkages. YCEI and TERI could have several mutually beneficial collaborative initiatives.

What will be your primary focus at YCEI?

As Yale researchers represent a whole range of discipline and expertise, I’ll have to evolve a common framework and direction for YCEI.

Will YCEI promote industry links?

Undoubtedly. Most US universities have strong links with industry—whether for policy implementation or technology development.

Would YCEI help developing nations access green technologies economically?

No. But we can guide governments and evolve policies for accessing green technologies.

Have IPCC reports helped create awareness?

The IPCC Fourth Assessment Report has made the public more aware. They will now demand action from governments.

Are countries implementing CC policies?

Definitely. Germany has a major thrust on renewable energy. A carbon trading system has been set up in the EU. Even in Japan new technologies are being developed and implemented.

Are emission cuts on target?

Countries are generally behind their Kyoto Protocol targets. It seems we will not meet the 2012 overall targets globally.

Is the focus on green fuels adequate?

Green fuels are not the only answer. We have to use energy efficiently and change lifestyles, which isn’t happening at the required pace.

Will Copenhagen cop frame strategies?

Absolutely, if we have a strong agreement on future strategies for low-carbon growth.
