On this side of the border, where not many Indian sporting heroes are bestowed a great deal of respect, his poise both on and off the field has won him many an admirer. While condemning some of its own stars for their overly flamboyant behaviour and unrestrained shenanigans, Pakistan's cricket fraternity holds Sachin Tendulkar in high esteem, across the board. Here, he is an exemplary role model for handling fame, adulation and fortune rather well. And when he—along with five other Indian players on a variety of charges—was sentenced for "bringing the game into disrepute" by the ICC match referee Mike Denness at Port Elizabeth for ball-tampering, people here were shocked.

Most cricket fans feel that Denness' decisions were harsh and arbitrary, and there was this palpable feeling of a certain bias. To many it brought to the fore the fact that cricketers from the subcontinent have largely been on the receiving end of the ICC's disciplining crusade.
