There’s good news for Muslims and CM Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy with the state Backward Classes Commission recommending five per cent reservation for the community in educational institutes and government jobs. A Congress election promise, it was among the first issues pushed through by the Reddy government, though turned down by the courts after several groups including the RSS and the VHP put in pils. The courts then appointed a Backward Classes Commission to study the merits of the case. Its 90-page report goes along with the state government decision. If the government acts quickly, some 15,000 Muslim students will benefit in the current academic year itself. One sore point: this will take the total percentage of reservation in the state to 51 per cent.
