In 1525, at the age of 42, Zahiruddin Muhammad Babar—prince, emperor, future founder of the Mughal succession and already an old man by the standards of his time—made his fifth and final expedition to Hindustan. Babari commentators usually agree that he did not like his new domain, and that the Babarnama is a record of his antipathy. The climate oppressed him with its hot ‘pestilential’ winds; he did not like the people nor the architecture; he is said to have wanted to return to Kabul. Writers often quote perhaps the best-known passage in the Babarnama, one that would appear to make its author’s opinion exceedingly clear: "Hindustan is a country of few charms. Its people have no good looks; of social intercourse, paying and receiving visits, there is none; of genius and capacity none; of manners none; in handicraft and work there is no form or symmetry, method or quality; there are no good horses, no good dogs, no grapes, musk-melons or first-rate fruits; no ice or cold water; no...
