You could say that it is a case of better late than never. Finally, a year away from 80, his brush still at the ready, K.G. Subramanyan, the long-anointed doyen of contemporary Indian artists, gets a retrospective at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi, beginning January 30. He is certainly not the oldest living artist; among others there are M.F. Husain and Paritosh Sen—B.C. Sanyal passed away on January 9 at a sprightly 102. Yet, Subramanyan's place in the pantheon of artists is deservedly prominent: he is there both as an artist and as an art teacher.

Painter, sculptor, printmaker, muralist, weaver, toy-maker, art teacher, designer and children's book illustrator—he's been all in turn or even simultaneously. And, used every material possible, including glass, iron sheets, terracotta, fabrics and porcelain. However, what sets him apart from his contemporaries, or even those who came later, is his insightful writing and lectures on modern art.
