Taking a cue from Jaswant Singh, the cash-strapped Maharashtra regime has announced Rs 1,700-crore worth of sops. The debt-ridden government had touted its reining in of spending as its greatest achievement. But with polls a couple of months away, chief minister Sushilkumar Shinde is hosting parties to lure filmstars to the Congress fold, and also easing the purse-strings. Government jobs, which had been frozen a few years ago, have been revived. Packages for Vidarbha and Konkan have also been announced. A Rs 700-crore package has been announced for the development of Vidarbha, whose statehood demand had polarised senior party leaders. A Rs 300-crore bonanza has also been granted to Konkan, a Shiv Sena bastion.
