Our Patent Reply
Two years after the Indian government went into patent overdrive for traditional systems of medicine, the good news is finally trickling in. The csir and the health ministry’s department of ayurveda, yoga and naturopathy, unani, siddha, and homoeopathy has finished patenting 36,000 ayurvedic formulations under its Traditional Digital Knowledge Library project. Another 22,000 ayurveda formulations await their patents. In its second phase, which began earlier this month, 75,000 unani formulations will be patented. The reference on the ayurveda formulations has been sent to 170 patent offices, so that a patent application for traditional formulations or processes can be verified vis-a-vis the database and a patent refused if it’s in there as ‘community knowledge’.
