It may be an apocryphal anecdote, but it has a ring of truth to it. Days before petroleum minister Murli Deora stalled the gas supply committed by Mukesh to Anil under the split agreement inked by the two Ambani brothers last year, Anil tried to meet Deora. The minister refused, and asked him to get in touch with the petroleum secretary. Later, the Anil camp admitted that senior bureaucrats in the petroleum ministry were working against their interests. In the recent past, other ministries have refused to entertain Anil, or his advisors, on several business issues.

In the Capital's power circles, the current buzz is that Anil is slowly—but steadily—losing his political clout. In private, members of the FoA (Friends of Anil) group lament that Anil is being "shafted" and is losing ground when it comes to "getting things done" in the corridors of power.
