With the brutal killing of Ghulam Hyder Noorani, the bjp candidate from Anantnag on September 7, was a stark reminder that the threats extended by those opposed to the electoral process in the Valley are not to be taken lightly. Militant outfits like the Hizbul Mujahideen have been putting up posters warning the electorate of dire consequences should they exercise their franchise. The Hurriyat Conference too, emboldened by the low turnout in Srinagar in the first phase of polling, has stepped up its 'boycott elections' campaign.

The Hurriyat's boycott call elicited considerable response in Srinagar. In all, just over 11 per cent polling was recorded in the Srinagar constituency which comprises the districts of Badgam and Srinagar. The constituency, which has a total electorate of 8,53,183, saw just 1,02,163 votes being polled. This put the total poll percentage at an all-time low of 11.97 per cent, and not 'over 12 per cent' as the election machinery in Srinagar would have people believe.
