JALANDHAR, PUNJAB
It’s No Drive To Freedom

The Jalandhar-based Non-Resident Indian Sabha—a state government initiative to attend to NRI problems—has reported that just a few days ago around 400 drivers sacked by the Al Hamadah Transport Company sat on dharna before the Indian embassy in Kuwait demanding help in returning home. Satnam Channa, the Sabha’s media director, told Outlook: "Though the drivers have been sacked, the companies are yet to give them the exit permit required to get their visas cancelled. It’s clearly a pressure tactic to coerce Indian drivers into going back to Iraq." Many companies have also not cleared the dues of the laid-off drivers. Many of those stuck in this limbo are now finding it difficult to even manage their meals. And obviously, they have no money for return tickets also. Channa estimates that over 1,000 Indian drivers have been affected, and the numbers are going up each day. The Sabha estimates that there are about 80,000 Indians working in the transport companies of Kuwait.
