It’s a voter’s list scam of epic proportions. Over 64 lakh names have been struck off the electoral rolls in Andhra after inquiries on the ground confirmed allegations that parties had been living off an inflated roster of voters. This can have a huge effect on the coming polls. In some segments, the number of voters were more than the overall population. The voter strength has now dropped from a staggering 71 per cent of the state’s population to a more reasonable ratio of 64 per cent. State chief electoral officer M. Narayana Rao says the verification exercise was a success, but isn’t absolutely sure that all bogus voters have been weeded out or that no genuine voter has been left out.
