The English release this week is as asinine as its Bollywood cousin. The mumbling-bumbling Englishman Bean wins himself a holiday to the French Riviera and runs amuck on his way to Cannes from Paris. It’s the usual slapstick but some scenes manage to hold. Bean’s street performance of an opera, for instance. And of course, the pretentious filmmaker Carson Clay (Dafoe) passing off sheer bilge for serious cinema at the Cannes opening—now, that touches a chord.
