What made you do a painting so big?
I did it in '92. Max Mueller Bhavan was staging a play. I painted it just before the show in front of a live audience in less than an hour. The painting was used as a backdrop.
Why is it being exhibited now?
The painting has been split in parts and exhibited earlier. I exhibited a portion in Chicago as a dedication to Octavio Paz whose understanding of India was so impressive.
Is this a publicity gimmick now that your film's nearing completion?
I don't understand this question.
What's the painting about?
It's about the violence that's around us everyday.
Was it about the Bombay riots?
No. This was in my mind for 50 years. There is violence all the time.
If you had more time and were alone, would this have been any different?
It's stupid to say you need more time to do better work or be alone to paint. You say it to hide your laziness and flaws. I don't have a problem painting...
