The opposition to the Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO) was not limited to the Opposition. The NDA's own allies—the DMK, TDP, Loktantrik Congress, JD(U), Trinamul Congress and the MDMK—have all expressed reservations, the principal reason the government postponed the all-party meeting to work out a consensus on the proposed law last week. The meeting will now be held in the first week of December, after the Consultative Committee of Parliament on Home Affairs meets on November 23.

This is clearly a step backwards for a government which was pushing it with the hawkish line: those who oppose POTO support terrorism. Cabinet sources now claim that the home ministry is working on amendments to make the ordinance more palatable to allies. These include removal of the controversial Section 3(8) which has been cause for much apprehension among the media. While not specifically mentioning it, this section makes it mandatory for journalists to "disclose information to be of material assistance in preventing any terrorist activity".
