Iyengar’s fine anthology will appeal to the discerning reader. Its range is wide—from politics and culture to police violence and public health; from the future of the English language in India to the need for designing brooms to improve the self-esteem of municipal sweepers.

Recent PMs include a few writers—witness Narasimha Rao’s novel, Vajpayee’s poetry and Manmohan Singh’s pre-political academics. But where today is the thinker-politician, reflecting on moral dilemmas and writing lyrically about books and nature? On second thoughts, this may be a rash invitation begetting campaign CV books in the Obama/Clinton mode. Maybe it would suffice for our politicians to just read more—this volume would be an excellent start.
