Hot, Haute Dilli

India's fashion industry has come a long way. And this year's fashion week proved it.

Hot, Haute Dilli Sanjoy Ghosh

The sixth Lakme India Fashion Week (LIFW), India's annual tryst with haute couture and make-believe, broke tradition in a significant way. It got real. Business was the buzzword. Fluff was out, numbers were in and dolls made way for deals. Here's Outlook's report on the fashfest.

Buying Time: International buyers emerged as the week's real heroes. Elisabeth Presden from Selfridges London, Michael Fink from Saks Fifth Avenue, New York, and Jason Broderick from Harrods, London, were the media's undisputed favourites. Fink—easy disposition, muscular chest, tattooed right arm—was the TV bytemaster between shows thanks to everyone assuming him to be a buyer, while he had been sent by the superstore to sniff out talent and report to the real decision makers. Also, before Indian fashion's cheerleaders break into song, it needs to be told that all three LIFW celebs were invited and their stay sponsored by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).
