CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda is reportedly pressing the Centre for a "bigger share" in the governance of the Union territory of Chandigarh—which for the last two decades or so has had the Punjab governor as administrator. Hooda thinks Haryana too should be given a chance to administer Chandigarh, capital of both Punjab and Haryana. The arrangement was started during the years of terrorism in Punjab when it was felt that Chandigarh should be brought under the administration of that state’s governor. Hooda now wants the two states to administer the city alternately, with fixed tenures for both. The Haryana CM’s demand adds another dimension to the never-ending battle for Chandigarh. Punjab has for long been demanding it be given the city as its capital.
