Gautam has written quite a few books since then. His latest, Whitewash, is an extended spoof, on how life is in India: the corruption, the inefficiency, the idiocies and the strange characters that inhabit our country. Interspersed in the text are ads and illustrations, take-offs on a variety of subjects. Some of it is hilarious, but some fall flat. His description of a ride in an Ambassador—the car of which it was said the only part that did not make a noise was the horn—had me in fits. And a classified ad with a picture of Osama bin Laden, reading, "Saudi millionaire with several US investments and business interests seeks anxious Muslims for short-lasting friendship" combines both wit and bite. You sense that in the architect, there is a writer trying to get out. Gautam needs to try harder.
