August 1, 1997: Naga ceasefire comes into effect

December 20, 1997: Ceasefire monitoring group formed
May-July, 1998: PM's emissary Swaraj Kaushal meets NSCN(IM) leaders in Bangkok
August 1, 1998: Truce extended for a year
August 20, 1998: NSCN(IM) leaders Muivah and Swu meet Vajpayee in Paris
May 1999: Muivah and Swu return to Nagaland after 33 years
July 1999: Talks held in Amsterdam. Truce extended.
January 2000: Muivah arrested in Thailand with forged passport
July 2000: Truce extended but no talks since Muivah is in jail
August 2000: NSCN(IM) demands extension of ceasefire to Naga-inhabited areas outside Nagaland. Assam, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh oppose it.
May 2001: Muivah and Swu threaten to withdraw from talks if territorial extension is not implemented
June 14, 2001: Padmanabhaiah meets Muivah and Swu in Bangkok. Announces territorial extension of ceasefire.
June 16, 2001: Trouble erupts in Manipur, Assam.
