Going It Alone
The BJP in Andhra Pradesh has decided to function independent of its ally, the TDP. This was decided at a meeting of its state executive, the first after the electoral debacle. The meeting, attended by BJP president Venkaiah Naidu, made it expressly known that alliances are only to be discussed at poll time. He told party workers they should look ahead, develop the party at the grassroots level and not focus on the TDP and its programmes. On the controversial Telangana ‘state’ issue, the party decided to postpone taking a stand, but added that the BJP line would not be dictated by Chandrababu Naidu. While the alliance with the TDP has not been officially called off, at the state level the BJP feels it has to forge an independent path for the party’s revival.
