There’s yet another symptom of the collective paranoia that has gripped Gujarat over the past 10 months: a spurt in the number of people intending to learn the use of firearms. Usually, it used to be a one-month-long wait before one could enrol with the civilian rifle training programme at the Ahmedabad Rifle Club. But since June, it’s been three to four months because of the large number of people in the queue. As soon as the club opened after the communal riots eased, there was a scramble.

According to the Rifle Club officials, such eagerness to learn to shoot was last witnessed during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Normally, the majority of those signing up are men pursuing a career in the police or the army. Now, even college-going youngsters, businessmen and doctors have joined those aspiring to learn to shoot.
