With rising cost of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) cutting into bottomlines, Jet Airlines has become the first to buckle, announcing a 10 per cent increase in passenger fares from June 21. Jet chairman Naresh Goyal told reporters that a revised fare schedule will be made public soon. He also added that he was going ahead with increased fares irrespective of what his competitors do. The announcement came after his meeting with Union civil aviation minister, Praful Patel. Meanwhile, aviation ministry officials admitted in private that other domestic carriers will now have no option but to follow suit. In fact, Indian Airlines has itself said it was looking at that option and there is a good chance that it will announce a fare-hike soon.
