But the chief minister has proved she means business. A senior dietician from AIIMS has provided a set of recommendations. Among the items not to be sold in canteens are aerated drinks, instant noodles and packaged junk food. Instead, fruit drinks and milkshakes have been recommended. Also dhokla, roasted soya, sprouted dal, idli and whole-wheat bread sandwiches and buns.

While the new menu has found acceptance among principals, it is yet to be seen how popular it will be with students. Both aereated drinks and packaged potato wafers are very popular among school-children. But the government believes its move will succeed since most students, at least in the elite schools, eat at their canteen at least four days a week.
