Upside

POPULATION: Sharpest fall ever in decadal population growth rate: 2.5 per cent points

LITERACY: At 65.38 per cent, it's up by 13.17 per cent points. The number of 'absolute illiterates' shows a decline for the first time since Independence

SEX RATIO: Shows an improvement. There are now 933 women per 1,000 men, as against 927 recorded in the 1991 census

Downside

POPULATION: There are now 57 more people in every square kilometre of the country as compared to 1991

LITERACY: We still have nearly 32 million people who are 'absolute illiterates'. Bihar has the country's lowest literacy rate at 47.53 per cent.

SEX RATIO: Sex-determination tests, foeticide and infanticide seem to have taken a toll. Sex Ratio for the below-six-year age group records 927 girl children per 1,000 boys, as against 945 in 1991
